Light Box

I made a box of lights for Asher.

He didn't actually enjoy it as much as I thought he would. He was a bit interested in the lights... but more interested in the box!

I think it worked a bit better when we laid inside the box with the lights above us. Until he started trying to chew on the flaps... but at least that was better than him trying to chew on the fairy lights!

Thanks, Grandma!

Asher helping Daddy open the parcel that arrived for him today...

And here he is enjoying the contents:

This is a chewable plastic hippo... a replacement for part of a toy that went missing a couple of weeks ago. I was bemoaning its loss, because it seemed to be one of the few things Asher could (and would) comfortably chew on when his teeth were bothering him. It fell off the bag it was velcroed onto and we thought it was gone forever.

We're seriously impressed, Grandma!

Asher Likes Broccoli

Look at that smile!

He actually ate a lot of broccoli (don't ask me how I know...) - also banana. He enjoyed chewing on avocado and carrot. Sweet potato was less of a hit, although I think that was accidental (he bit off more than he could chew...) - and today he tried some melon. I don't think he enjoyed it quite so much, but he was a bit tired to begin with.

Also he seems to love drinking water. Or at least, he had a drink from Noah's cup today and kept putting it back to his lips. But maybe he just wanted to chew on the cup... He doesn't really need water at the moment but it's ok for him to have a little bit.

I'm looking forward to July - he'll be 6 months then, which means the range of foods he can eat will greatly expand. We'll be able to give him a little bit of most things we have.

Hmmm. Maybe I need to start eating more vegetables and less chocolate!

In the Garden

Walking around with Daddy

Playing with Mummy

Touching things

Grabbing things

Trying to eat everything

Asher likes being in the garden!

Food!

We gave Asher some food!

I think he liked it.

His first food was chosen by the youth at church (all the Pathfinders had a chance to vote on it). They felt that avocado as a first food was most likely to result in a strong, healthy and altogether awesome teenager, so that's what we went for.

He actually found it pretty difficult to pick up, or at least to keep hold of. It kept slipping out of his fingers as he tried to put it in his mouth. Lots got squidged onto his hands and he sucked it off for a while. Then eventually he managed to grab a piece and poke the end into his mouth. He chewed... then gave a huge smile! Then chewed some more. So, I think he liked it.

Afterwards we were eating strawberries and cream, so we gave him a strawberry.

It quickly got squashed.

Ash decided that a much easier option than picking the strawberry up would be to lean down and hoover it off the highchair tray with his mouth. Which was precisely what he did. He came up with a bit of strawberry dangling down his chin. Charming! This time he pulled an "eating lemons" kind of face - but he kept chewing, so he must have liked that too.

This is what he looked like after his meal:

Still sucking avocado off his fingers!
You can't even see his sleeves in the picture. Seriously, they were caked in avocado. They practically turned green! We do have bibs, but I'm not sure how helpful they'll be... I think an entire eating outfit would be more useful :D

I am also going to buy a piece of PVC coated fabric to put down under his highchair. That way we can give back the bits that go on the floor. It might also make cleaning up afterwards a tad easier...

This is going to be FUN!

Five Months

Wow.

I remember being amazed that I had a baby who was a whole three days old.

Five months is loads!!

Slowly but surely, Asher's little personality has been developing. He is a cheerful charmer - apart from when things aren't going his way, of course, when he quickly gets upset. Otherwise he is usually smiling, or shrieking with delight, or happily babbling (starting to hear some b and v sounds from him these days!)

Ash seems pretty sociable - he smiles at anyone and everyone - but of course his biggest smiles are reserved for people he knows well. He's just starting to giggle, although it's quite a challenge to get one out of him. I try and get at least one a day. My most successful giggle-inducing tactics are to kiss his neck, to kiss his armpits and to sing the little green frog song. (Tickling still has no effect).

Mid-shriek

Reading to Asher has become more challenging as his reach has increased alongside his improving ability to grab things and stuff them in his mouth. However we persevere. He usually listens quietly (and with a big smile) to Go Baby Go (which we seem to have on permanent loan from the library, but I'm thinking of buying a copy, he likes it so much). I'm not sure if that's the familiarity, or the rhyme and rhythm, or the fact that the words are printed in bold type on bright colours, usually on the page facing the pictures, and he likes to look at them. We are expanding his little library though, and he also usually enjoys the delightful Pants, by Giles Andreae and Nick Sharratt.
"Oh look... I can undo this!"
Oh yes. Nappies are for chewing on, apparently. Our little nudist still prefers to be without his - and today he made a discovery which might benefit him in this regard!

We've altered the sleeping arrangements slightly. Asher's cot (with the side removed) is now lashed to the side of our bed and it's made things a lot easier for me. He still wakes up 4-5 times in the night and this way I don't have to get out of bed to feed him. Sometimes he stays asleep when I move him back over too, but not always. After a few weeks of really difficult nights during which I could feel myself going crazy, we decided to try the dummy again. You have to persevere to get Asher to take it, but if he's tired enough it does allow him to go to sleep without being held. The excellent effect of this has been to allow him to self-settle between sleep cycles (even without the dummy) - i.e. I don't have to rock him back to sleep every 30 minutes. Hooray!

Oh yeah... he can sit up. He's still only rolled over a handful of times, but I think he would like to do it again so I expect he'll be off across the living room floor before long. He really likes going outside and is starting to show an interest in Marmite (The cat. Not the yeast extract). Ash really cheers me up with the huge smile he gives me every time he sees me. Today I held him up to a mirror and it was really cute: he kept grinning at my reflection, then turning round to look at the real me with a slightly confused expression. I'm so excited about all the experiences there are for him to enjoy.

By the way, a five month old is more aware of things than you might expect. And also has a longer reach and a firmer grip than you might desire! Asher has worked out that my phone must be a very interesting object and is determined to get it into his mouth. He loves to look at the computer, and sometimes stops to listen if he hears typing! Hair is a tasty and tantalising morsel (mine, Noah's, Noah's beard, even Noah's leg hair!) - I carried him in the backpack the other day without tying it up and let me tell you, that was a mistake!

"What is that thing Mum keeps pointing at my face? I think I can grab it..."
I have a feeling that being a parent is about to become even harder work!

Up North

Last weekend we went up North to visit the Johnian Contingent. (You might wonder why we were invited, as none of us are technically Johnians. It's a long story.) They don't all live up North, of course, but that's where the meeting was held. And we had a lovely time!

Asher enjoyed another ride in the baby backpack when we went for a little tour of the domain.

Noah enjoyed carrying him too - even when we climbed up the hill opposite the house. It was windy and heathery and we had to duck under a huge holly tree. Noah took care to avoid Asher's face coming into contact with any overhanging greenery (a task made much more difficult by Asher's determination to grab and chew on anything and everything).

Claire, Matthew and Ian surveyed the estate:

Meanwhile, the Mitchells attempted a family photo:

Oh yeah.

This was (by quite a small margin) the furthest North Asher has ever been. Also I guess technically his first hill... although I don't think it has a name. His enjoyment of the whole experience bodes well for the Lake District holiday we have planned for August. Hooray!
